Royal Crown Derby: Princess Diana's 1987 visit

Jump to: navigation, search

Royal Crown Derby - in keeping with its name and status - has enjoyed a number of visits to its Derby factory from many members of the Royal family down the years.

On December 10, 1987, it was the turn of Princess Diana, Princess of Wales, whose gentle sense of humour kept the workers and the obligatory accompanying press pack smiling.

She was asked to sign "Diana" on the base of a commemorative candlestick at the factory. A wise-cracking photographer asked her if she had spelt it correctly.

"I make the jokes round here," warned the Princess, to shrieks of laughter.

It was a freezing cold day - it seems that the weather's often unkind when the Royals visit Derby - and a group of youngsters from Ivy House school had to be warmed up with hot drinks after they endured a long wait for the Princess outside the Osmaston Road factory. But she rewarded their patience by stopping for a chat and to accept a posy from five-year-old Shabmim Mushtaq.
