Scattergood, Ernald Oak - Riddings lad was England goalie
ERNALD OAK SCATTERGOOD was one of a select group of men born in Derbyshire to play football for England. He was goalkeeper on just one occasion, against Wales at Ashton Gate in March 1913.
One of a remarkably long line of Derbyshire-born goalkeepers to attain the highest level in English football, he was born in Riddings on 29 May 1887. He began his football career playing for Riddings and then Ripley Athletic, before signing for Derby County in August 1907. He played 192 games for the Rams before signing for Bradford in 1914.
After surviving being gassed in World War One, he played 288 games for Bradford and finished his career with a spell at Alfreton Town in the mid-1920s. Unusually for a goalkeeper, he was the designated penalty-taker for both Derby County and Bradford, and his eight goals is a record for a goalkeeper in the Football League.
His son Ken Scattergood was also a goalkeeper and played 25 games for Derby County in 1936-37.
Ernald Scattergood died in Worksop on 2 July 1932, aged only 45.
