Sir Martin Doughty, left, has been chair of the environmental agency Natural England and its predecessor body English Nature since 2001.

Between 1992 and 2001, he was Labour leader of Derbyshire County Council, taking over from long-serving predecessor David Bookbinder before being eventually succeeded by the current leader, John Williams.

Sir Martin, from New Mills, Derbyshire, began his career as a lecturer in Environmental Management at Sheffield Hallam University.

He developed his expertise and interest in nature conservation first as chairman of Derbyshire's planning committee and then, as council leader, as chair of the Peak District National Park Authority.

Sir Martin, who was also a Board Member of the Countryside Agency between 1999 – 2005, was knighted in 2001 for services to local government in Derbyshire.

He received Honorary Doctorates from Sheffield Hallam University in 2002, Cranfield University in 2005 and Derby University in 2006
