Talk:Derby Hippodrome: Venue was real palace of variety

I'm not sure of the year but it was around 1953, I was around 15 year old and I was a poor soul who collected autographs. Max Wall was topping the bill so after the show ended I went to the stage door to wait for him to come out.It seemed ages and he hadn't appeared so I opened the stage door and went inside.I went down this narrow corridor and came across a door with a star sign on the door,I knocked on the door but didn't get an answer,so I opened the door to have a look in.Imagine my embaressment in seeing Max Wall with a scantly clad showgirl on his knee.I quickly shut the door and made a quick exit, that was the end of collecting autographs. Prior to this in 1947 my dad had a shop and on the side of the shop we had a big hoarding on which the Grand Theatre advertised its shows, for this we received weekly free tickets, this was before television so it was a big privelage. Acts that I can remember were Old Mother Riley[Arthur Lucan] Rob Wilton, Vic Oliver, Jimmy James, Eli Wood and a young Roy Castle, Jimmy Edwards, The Crazy Gang, Hutch, Paul Roebson, Victor Borge, The Western Brothers, Elsie and Doris Waters, and their brother Jack Warner. One of the funnest sights was when Jane the Daily Mirror forces pin up appeared in a variety of poses in flimsy costumes in a wooden frame and the frame kept collapsing she had a little dachsund dog called Fritz and he bolted off stage. It was supposed to be serious attempt at glamour posing but the audience was in stiches.

I expect a lot of people reading this will not have heard of many of the above, but they were top stars of their day.
