Talk:Duffield: Boy, Oh Boy and other village characters
Duffield Park
Duffield Park was later aquired by Edward Wood & Sons (later the Wood Construction Group) and the main house converted into six executive apartments. Many of these were leased to American executives of the old Rolls Royce Co. Mr Croucher was employed as a Groundsman/Gardener to look after the extensive grounds.I lived next door to Mr Croucher and his wife for many years in a tied cottage on Tamworth St. The Crouchers daughter married a chap named Joe Swallow and they lived next to the Crouchers (the other side to me). In the early sixties Joe, his wife and daughter emigrated to Canada to be followed a couple of years later by Mr & Mrs Croucher, this was obviously a major upheaval for the Crouchers as they were now quite elderly.I remember my mother and I farewelling them at the airport. The Crouchers settled with their son in law and daughter in Niagara Falls . I was able to pay them a short visit whilst in Canada in 1967 for the World Fair, EXPO67.
Another residance on "The Park" was originally a guest house ,and then renamed "The Mews". This was occupied by Mrs Spall , maitriarch of the Spall family of jewellers.
