Billy Hughes

I remember the massacre at pottery cottage i was forteen years of age at the time, the whole town was in fear not knowing where hughes would turn up next. After he had been shot i was told it was one of my old school mates father who had fired the bullet which ended his reign of terror. Today 23rd October2007 i had to deliver some bricks to a builder working at the last cottage in the row just past the highwayman public house, it was a forgotten time until the chap was saying he had been working in the house and thinking back about what had happened it made him feel very uncomfortable been inside the cottage. This brought back memories for me so i decided to have a look on the internet, typed in Billy Hughes on Google and discoveredYou and Yesterday which i shall be looking into further looks very interesting.

I too remember the night that William Hughes was "on the run" from the Police. I was living in Edensor at the time with my mum and younger sister. I was 10 years old and very scared. We were sent home from school early when we learned that he had escaped and how dangerous the man was. The whole thing has remained with me for the last 30 years, I'm now 40 and when I saw Billy Hughes' photo on this site I cried. I don't think I have slept properly ever since that night if I'm totally honest. Whenever I hear a helicopter or unexplained noises in the night I'm taken back to that frightening night in the snow. I remember the police knocking on the door, it was very late and very dark, and asking mum if she had seen anybody lurking about. She slept with a knife under her pillow and my sister and me by her side. Amazing that there are massacres every other week nowadays and we don't even give the stories the time of day but back then it was quite unusual and so had quite an effect on me and my life today.
