Talk:Wright, Joseph
The often made assertion that Wright 'witnessed an eruption of Vesuvius' while he was in Italy is considered by historians of the locality to be incorrect. Wright was in Italy 1773-75 and the last eruption of Vesuvius prior to that date was 1767. The next one after that was 1777. Wright must therefore have simply used his imagination in depicting Vesuvius in action, and he was certainly interested in the landmark. He is said to have featured Vesuvius in around 30 pictures in total.
