The Old Cheese Factory
Located in the tiny village of Windley two miles north of Duffield, in Derbyshire, originally a malt house dating back to the seventeenth century, the building was used to house the first cheese factory co-operative in Derbyshire, and started manufacturing cheese in 1873 under the auspices of the High Sheriff J.G. Crompton. The property, which stands in the grounds of Windley Hall, has been empty since 1945 but was recently renovated by the owners of the Hall who have turned it into a holiday property. In renovating the Cheese Factory every effort was made to retain the original features such as the oak beams and lime ash floor.
The remnants of stone foundations of a water wheel used to power the cheese factory can be seen along the sides of the stream in the garden of the (private) property next door.
