The night the Luftwaffe came to Derby
The above picture shows people patiently queuing for water from a container lorry in Rosehill Street, Derby, on January 17, 1941, following a Luftwaffe raid which presumably destroyed water pipes and drains.
Six bombs were dropped on the Normanton area in the raid. Note the shattered windows. Rosehill Street and Madeley Street were both hit.
Florence Brewster, 59, the occupant of No 100 Madeley Street was badly injured and later died in the DRI. The bandstand in the Arboretum, Litchurch Street and Canal Street were also hit.
The photograph was originally censored by the Ministry of Defence.
