Three Lions On Their Shirt - England Footballers Born In Derbyshire
Representing one's country in the sporting arena is always considered a great achievement, whatever the sport. But 'playing for England' at football, our national sport, has had a special ring to it for well over a century, since the first England team played a competitive match in 1872. A select number of those England international players were born in Derbyshire, and sports historian and Derby-born author Peter Seddon has paid tribute to each and every one of them in the pages of You & Yesterday
The statistical records suggest that 35 men born in Derbyshire had the singular honour of playing football for England in an officially-recognised full international game.
Some are well-known, others slightly less so, and yet more entirely 'forgotten'. Some of them played but a solitary game, yet each and every one could utter those immortal words that countless schoolboys have only dreamed of - 'I played football for England'.
A few of the articles are lacking photographs - indeed even the official Football Association archives are missing photographs of some of the earlier England players. Perhaps you can help fill the gaps for the faceless few.
Maybe you were even related to one of the players, and can provide missing birth or death dates, or reveal where they are buried. Sports historians are always keen to complete such gaps in the records, and the personal details of some players have proved notoriously elusive.
A number of the men listed worked in Derbyshire outside football - perhaps you worked alongside them or have anecdotal stories to relate. All additional contributions and memories are welcome.
Here is the full list of articles. Just click on any title to read the piece. If you think any players have been missed out, then create a new article about them. The only qualifying criteria is that they made at least one senior full international appearance for England AND were born in Derbyshire. So for once even Steve Bloomer is ruled out!
