When Derby was a cool place to live!
Workmen are pictured above clearing snow in Victoria Street, Derby, In January 1942. Tons of snow were tipped through man holes into Markeaton Brook and the River Derwent to shift it quickly.
This photograph had to be passed by the censorship bureau because of wartime restrictions. It shows an odd mixture of transport, with buses and trolleybuses running side by side, and a horse and cart in the foreground.
Do you recognise any familiar faces or recall that winter of 42? If so, why not add your memories by clicking on the edit link at the top of the page?
The photograph below was taken more than a decade later, in 1958. It shows a frozen fountain in Derby town centre, looking like a magnificent ice sculpture.
But where was it located? Is that the cathedral in the background? If you can tell us anything about the picture, please add your comments. The location of this view is the Corporation Street/Morledge roundabout, with Tenant Street in the background. The tower referred to is not the Cathedral but the Guildhall clock tower. Barry Edwards
