First World War
The First World War was a global military conflict which took place primarily in Europe between 1914 and 1918.
More than nine million soldiers, and millions more civilians, died.
The Allied Powers, led by France, Russia, the United Kingdom, Italy, and, from 1917, the United States, defeated the Central Powers, led by Austria-Hungary, Germany, and the Ottoman Empire.
World War I marked the end of the old world order, which had emerged after the Napoleonic Wars. The result of the conflict was an important factor in the outbreak of World War II.
No other war had changed the map of Europe so dramatically - four empires disappeared: the German, Austro-Hungarian, Ottoman and the Russian.
Belgium was badly damaged, as was France with 1.4 million soldiers dead, not counting other casualties. Germany and Russia were similarly effected.
The war had profound economic consequences. In addition, a major flu epidemic that started in Western Europe in the latter months of the war, killed millions in Europe and then spread around the world.
